A little bit of history

Paper Towel Study

Picture
During this project, members worked closely with University at Buffalo Facilities to install and collect data from high-tech hand dryers in high traffic bathrooms. A life cycle analysis (LCA) was conducted  to determine the carbon footprint trade off between Dyson Airblade hand dryers and paper towels.
This project was highly successful as ESW-UB was recognized for Paper Towel Study at the New York State Pollution Prevention Institute Student Competition in April 2013.

Pedal Power

Picture

Pedal power is the transfer of energy from a human source through the use of a foot pedal and crank system. ESW-UB has created a system that drives a belt to turn a motor and generate electricity to a set of light bulbs. We use the bike at outreach events to show demonstrate to people how much energy electronics require.

Solar Smoothie Cart

Picture
In the past, fundraising has been slightly less than sustainable—that’s why our team has created the Solar Smoothie Cart. A cart, similar to a fair’s hot dog cart with a solar panel attached above, powers blenders to make smoothies for hungry sports fans and the campus community. We also purchased water heaters, which allow us to sell hot chocolate during the winter months.

As part of Sun Edison/MEMC's new grant, the University at Buffalo entered the solar kiosk competition. The cart is fully functional and powers our blenders better than ever! The cart is hit on campus every time it makes an appearance! Although the building of this project is complete, we're always looking for volunteers to help work the cart. Feel free to contact any of the E-board members for more information.
